Water Use in Ottawa Watershed
The Ottawa River Basin is in a medium to heavily-populated area. Primary water uses are as a source for hydroelectric power generation, domestic water supply, effluent dilution (wastewater), recreational boating and a limited amount of log driving.
A reliable source of clean freshwater is needed by industries reliant on water for production processes, agriculture for irrigation and livestock, and the public for recreation and home water consumption.
Integrated watershed management involves information sharing regarding urban land use and significant water withdrawals, including municipal intakes, and may promote water conservation through coordinated pricing, improved efficiency and public education.
City of Gatineau
Quebec has implemented a Provincial regulation under the Québec National Water Policy requiring municipal water conservation. The City of Gatineau is accountable to the Province through the policy for the enactment of an Action Plan by 2007 including a strategy to ensure a per capita water consumption decrease of 20%. An integrated approach would support a common water conservation goal and strategy that would encourage cooperation and joint campaigns to achieve results.
Water taking permits allow for the removal of water from the watershed for commercial purposes. Data on the number of and water taking allowances of these permits will be of use in understanding the amount of water used in this way.
