United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

In 1992, Canada, along with more than 150 other countries, committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by signing the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change at the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development (also referred to as the Earth Summit). In December 1992, Canada became one of the first countries to ratify its signature to the Convention.

Government Responsibilities

Federal

The Federal government monitors and reports on greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. It is also responsible for negotiating Canada’s commitments under the Kyoto Protocol.

The Federal government is in the process of releasing new climate change policies; including incentives for renewable energy development and use, and encouraging energy efficiency in homes.
