Community Activities in Rideau Watershed

Foleys Spy RockFoleys Spy RockThe Rideau Valley is a hotbed of active, committed environmental volunteers working quietly and consistently to maintain the health of our valuable local water resources. The number of volunteer groups is large ranging from Environmental Clubs at several local schools to the Ottawa Field-Naturalists’ Club, one of the oldest and most respected natural science groups in Canada. In between are a host of others from families to community associations, lake associations, municipalities, the business and farming community, colleges and universities who all have active people and volunteer projects in the valley many in cooperation with established government agencies like the Conservation Authorities, the provincial Ministries and the City of Ottawa.

Success Stories in Rideau Watershed!

Kemptville Creek:

  • Completion of a Beaver Management Pilot Project to demonstrate that beaver dam removals can be carried out to manage water levels without adverse impacts on aquatic habitat
  • RVCA has increased water quality monitoring

Jock river:

  • The formation of Friends of the Jock River who have planted thousands of trees, removed garbage from the river and increased river awareness over the past eight years
  • RVCA has increased water quality monitoring

Parks and Conservation Areas in Rideau Watershed

Rideau WatershedRideau WatershedThe RVCA owns and manages over 40 properties totalling over 2300 hectares  The Authority is also involved with the management of several properties under various lease agreements or other formal arrangements. Some conservation lands are purely for natural preservation, natural areas performing natural functions, other areas are available for passive recreation to provide environmentally compatible outdoor recreational opportunities and other conservation areas are more developed and marketed areas with environmental programs, demonstration areas, interpretive signage and several facilities for day use activities.
